The History of our Hotel in Val di Fassa
On 2nd of September 1898 the warden of the Passo San Pellegrino refuge, Giuseppe
Volcan, asked Moena Town Council for permission to build a hotel among the green
pastures of the pass. On 22nd October of the same year permission was granted and
building commenced, taking shape in 1899 with the name "Monzoni".
The building was solid, suitable for withstanding harsh winters and violent summer storms;however, being on the front line, it was damaged irreparably during the Great War.
The original building was destroyed by the Austrians and only 20 years later rebuilt on its original site. Over the years the hotel was transformed and, as can be read in guide books from that period, there were even gondolas on the morainic lake near the hotel. The management of the hotel passed from Giuseppe into the hands of his son Arcangelo and subsequently, his grandchildren until 1977.
At this time winter sports started to become popular and the first ski-lifts were built at the side of the Monzoni refuge. This was now the beginning of tourism in the Dolomites. The horse-drawn sleds could not always manage the pass and, therefore, luggage and skis were carried by porters.
In summer the first motor cars appears, headed by the Diato Utility Truck driven by Arcangelo Volcan.
In 1978 the property changed hands as was acquired by a company. The hotel underwent considerable alterations and the old mountain refuge dating from the beginning of the century was transformed into a modern and comfortable hotel, the ideal place for a highly enjoyable holiday.
